HOW DOES REVERSAL OR DISSOLVING OF HA FILLERS WORK?

To dissolve HA fillers we require an enzyme named hyaluronidase. Hyaluronidase is a POM (prescription only medicine) and therefore can only be held by a doctor, dentist or nurse/pharmacist prescriber. It acts to dissolve HA fillers by breaking down the individual molecules and releasing water. The process itself in is injecting hyaluronidase into the targeted area and applying a firm massage to assist the breakdown of filler.

Hyaluronidase remains active for up to 48 hours however it is recommended to avoid refilling said area for at least 2 weeks. This prevents inadvertently dissolving the new filler that is being placed.

A patch test is required prior to elective dissolution of HA filler to help prevent allergic reactions!

FAQs

Brief list of FAQs

DOES IT HURT?

In essence no, the solution of hyaluronidase can be mixed with lidocaine (a numbing agent) that helps to minimise discomfort and allow the procedure to continue readily.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE MIGRATION?

Migration at the early stages can be relatively subtle however once in the later stages becomes much more prominent. Migration can occur for plenty of reasons ranging from the volume of filler injected, depth of injection, type of filler and time itself.

If you’d like more information on migration or think you may have a degree of filler migration then book in for a face to face consultation where we can assess and discuss your options!

CAN ALL FILER BE DISSOLVED?

Only HA based fillers can be dissolved using hyaluronidase which is why they are the most widely used filler. The amount and density of filler will determine how readily the filler dissolves. Fillers with a high G prime (very dense) can require multiple appointments of dissolution to entirely remove their components.

Again, a thorough consultation including history of what has been injected, where and when helps plan these treatments.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

Once injected the filler will start to dissolve within a few minutes and up to the ensuing 2 days.

Refilling is to be avoided for up to 14 days to allow for healing of the tissues and to prevent inadvertent dissolution of the new filler being placed.
